Assembly on Truth

A look at 'truth'. This assembly was really around telling the truth and its importance. There was not a huge Christian element for a good reason on this occasion, but this could quite easily be added - I have added some content in brackets.

Story (use a personal story)

I used a story where I wasn't honest.. When I was younger (and not a Christian), my parents went away to another city for a couple of days. Myself and my brother decided we'd have a party that night and got lots of alcohol in to the house. My parents are strictly against alcohol and would never have it in the house. We had a few friends round and had lots of drinks. Suddenly, one of our friends ran in and said our parents were back! The car had developed a problem and they'd come back, not letting us know. We shoved cans under the sofa, bottles behind cushions. The parents walked in and they we all were standing around suspiciously. We ran outside and hid the cans in the hedge. That caused a few problems - when we don't do right, when we lie and deceive other people, there are always consequences!

Amazing Facts – True or False

A monkey was once tried and convicted for smoking a cigarette in South Bend, Indiana - TRUE

Most lipstick contains beetle juice – FALSE but it does contain fish scales!

Right handed people live, on average, nine years longer than left-handed people - TRUE

An ostrich's eye is bigger than its brain - TRUE

Slugs have a nose – FALSE they have 4 noses!

Owls are the only birds who can see the colour blue - TRUE

A man named Charles Osborne had the hiccups for 69 years! - TRUE

A giraffe can clean its ears with its 21-inch nose – FALSE they use their 21” tongue!

Some worms will eat themselves if they can't find any food! - TRUE

Coca-Cola would be purple if colouring weren’t added to it – FALSE it's actually green

At the first World Cup championship in Uruguay, 1930, the soccer balls were actually monkey skulls wrapped in paper and leather. –TRUE

Never hold your nose and cover your mouth when sneezing, as it can blow out your brains – FALSE - but it can blow out your eyeballs!

True Story

On a trip to visit a friend in Canada, I went to the bank and the teller and got my American Express travellers cheques exchanged for Canadian dollars. The lady gave me the money in an envelope. Towards the end of my time in Canada, I hadn't spent the money, but there seemed to be extra money in the envelope. I counted it up and realised that instead of giving me C$20 she had actually given me 2 C$100 bills, meaning I had C$200 and not C$40! I did think about keeping it, but insisted that we go back to the bank and give it back. My friends were very upset, believing that I should keep it. Eventually, just before my flight, we went and gave back the money. The teller was amazed and rushed out to the back and gave the only thing she had, a lollipop! I had to tell the truth.

(As a Christian, we don't just religiously follow rules, but God changes our hearts so that we don't want to lie and steal)

£10 note - telling the students a 'truth'

Get a nice new £10 note and say it is worth £10. Then screw it up, put it on the floor. Make it dirty etc. SAY that the note is still worth £10. No matter how dirty we are, no matter how messed up, no matter how we feel - we are valuable. Just like the £10 is still worth £10 no matter how crumpled up it is.

(You can relate this to the truth that God loves us, paid a price for us and loves us, no matter how we feel. We have great value to God).

GET STUDENTS UP – Prime them before…

Get some to say true things and some to say false things…

The crowd have to guess what’s truth and what’s not!!

OR – say some things about yourself

FUNNY STORIES

A woman's red station wagon was crushed by an elephant at a circus. The owners of the animal apologized, explaining that the animal, for some reason, simply liked to sit on red cars. In spite of the damage, the woman's car was still drivable. But on the way to the garage she was stopped short by an accident involving two other cars just ahead of her. When the ambulance arrived a few minutes later the attendants took one look at her car, then ran over to assist her.

"Oh, I wasn't involved in this accident," she explained. "An elephant sat on my car." The ambulance attendants quickly bundled her off to the hospital for possible shock and head injuries, despite the lady's vehement protests.

POINT

You may not realise it, but the truth is essential.

A friend went for an interview in London. Due to lots of circumstances she was unable to make a couple interviews and lots of things went wrong. However, she got the job! One of the main reasons she got the job was because she was honest.

Nothing can happen without the truth. If you lie, it will find you out. If you diss people, it will come back to you. If you make up stuff, it will eventually come back to haunt you. Truth will set you free. If you tell the truth, you don’t need to fear what people say or what you have said. You can feel good inside, not worrying about lies that eat you up. Truth = freedom.

(The Bible encourages people to 'know the truth' and gives us the proimise that 'the truth shall set you free'. If you want to be free in life, if you feel imprisoned.. Christians believe there is only one way out - Jesus).
