Good vs Evil – The Eternal Battle
When you look around at most action and SciFi movies, you’ll see a key theme almost every time…
There is a battle between good and evil – Star Wars, the Marvel movies, James Bond etc. Each time there is an evil person or force seeking to do something wrong. Against them is set a good hero or heroine and their team, fighting to do good and do what is right. You even find this in cartoons and animations.

The Big Lie and The Big Answer
There is a big lie that lots of people are promoting at the moment. The lie is that God is not good. But more than that, people are saying that God is evil. Have you heard people say stuff like this? When people say this, sometimes they go even further and think that things that are against God are good. But this is a big fat lie that the enemy of God, satan, is using.

The lie is that somehow God isn’t good and is trying to keep us under his control, like he is some kind of mad control freak who is power mad and wants to keep everyone doing whatever he wants like some kind of evil dictator. The lie goes on to say that it is satan who is the one who will free you from this ‘horrible control freak God’. This causes people to fight against God, makes people do their own thing and reject God. People don’t know that when they believe this lie that satan has set himself up as some kind of freedom fighter.
Have you seen the movie ‘The Lion, The Witch and the Wardrobe’? In this movie, Edmond is annoyed with his brothers and sisters, goes into Narnia, meets the evil queen and thinks that she is good. But behind her ‘sweetness’ is an evil queen. In time, Edmond finds out she is evil. She only wants to kill, destroy and be a dictator. Fortunately, Edmond finds out and says sorry. This is an amazing example of the lies of satan and the only answer to escape his evil – turning to Jesus and following him !

The truth is that it is satan who comes only to kill, destroy, rob and ruin lives. He is the one who caused suffering, hatred, death and pain. The world was a perfect place before Adam and Eve gave in to his lies. Since then this world has been full of evil and every kind of bad thing. Every human is trapped. But Jesus came to set people free from sin and death. He is the true freedom fighter who comes to offer people the chance to be free from the kingdom of darkness and death.
Colossians 2.13-15 (The Bible) – You were dead because of your sins and because your sinful nature was not yet cut away. Then God made you alive with Christ, for he forgave all our sins. He canceled the record of the charges against us and took it away by nailing it to the cross. In this way, he disarmed the spiritual rulers and authorities. He shamed them publicly by his victory over them on the cross.
In the Star Wars movies, we see the dark force fighting against the good Force.

This is exactly what is happening in our world today behind the scenes. There is a battle between good and evil that is being worked out. But just like in a movie where we know that good will eventually win, we have the truth that God has actually already won the war against evil. When Jesus died on the cross, he said ‘it is finished’. He meant that the war against satan was fully won. We also know this from the Bible and Colossians which tells us that Jesus won the victory over satan on the cross. Why? Because Jesus had defeated sin and all evil and made a way for man to be restored with God. If we believe in Jesus and turn to him with all our heart and life, we are rescued out of darkness and brought into life, light and hope and all of God’s goodness!

Choices, Choices…
There is a rapper who was a Christian rapper. In December 2015, he started posting on Facebook about how he had turned his back on God. He started by saying this but got more and more hostile towards God. It was really sad. But the bad thing was that his physical appearance changed. He didn’t look quite right – but looked very disturbed like something evil had come over him. That is what happens when we turn our back on God – we actually choose evil, even if we don’t mean to or don’t want to.
This is what Jesus said (Matthew 12.30) – Anyone who isn’t with me opposes me, and anyone who isn’t working with me is actually working against me.
There is a battle between good and evil. The big question is – which side are you on? The winning side or the side that has already lost. There is no hope for people who choose evil because this means rejecting the only freedom fighter who can help you – Jesus.
So today just pray this: Jesus, I want you to be the one in charge of my life. I know you only want the best for me and to do me good. I want to turn from what is wrong and ask you to come into my heart and make me new. Fill me with your love and goodness – your Holy Spirit. Help me to be like you and bring your message of hope and help to the world. Amen.
