In this assembly, we're going to be looking at succeeding despite the odds. We'll find out that we can always come out on top, if we choose to keep on going, keep learning, being positive, having hope and faith..
(This assembly has a good 15 minute amount of content. So use what feels right and not all of it!)
I personalised this by adding in 2 stories from my own life of overcoming bad stuff and having faith.
There are all kinds of funny signs, as people make all kinds of deliberate and accidental mistakes!
On a plumber's truck: "We repair what your husband fixed"
On an opticians door: "If you don't see what you're looking for, you've come to the right place"
In a toilet in an office block: "Toilet out of order. Please use floor below"
Outside a second-hand shop: "We exchange anything - bicycles, washing machines etc. Why not bring your wife in and get a wonderful bargain"
Sign in a laundrette: "Automatic washing machine. Please remove all your clothes when the light goes out"
Sign warning of quicksand: "Quicksand. Anyone passing this point will be drowned. By order of the District Council"
You see, we all make mistakes!
Optional movie clip from Mr Bean goes on holiday
Clip is Chapter 19 on the DVD.
SAY - in this clip, Mr Bean has had loads of bad things happen, but eventually he finds his way to where he wants to be. The same should be true of us. Despite setbacks, we can succeed in spite of what happens.
After Eight mint game
Buy some after eight mints and get some volunteers up to the front. When there, give them an after eight mint each. Ask them to take it out of the wrapper, tilt their head back and put the after eight mint on their forehead. They have to get it into their mouth without touching it with their hands.
Youtube clip of Derek Redmond
There is a great clip from Youtube of the British athlete, Derek Redmond. When running the 400m, he tore his hamstring. But with his dad's help, he crossed the line and got a massive cheer. The clip can be found at - http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=_zi0_LjHHN4 .
There are ways and means of downloading YouTube clips from browsers which you can search for online. Otherwise there’s software that can ‘record’ videos online.
SAY - Christians believe that at Easter, Jesus rose from the dead and that although things seemed to be bad when he died, he would rise from the dead and have the victory.
The thing for us is that even when things seem to be in a bad place, there is always hope. What looks bad now can be turned around.
(Story taken from the great book ‘A Barrel of Fun’ by J. John and Mark Stibbe [Monarch Books, 2003] page 76.)
The story is told of a black woman in South Africa who is sitting in a courtroom in a case by the South African Truth and Reconciliation Commission. In the dock is Mr van der Broek who years earlier came to the woman's home, took her son. He then shot him and set fire to his body. A while later, he returned and took away the woman's husband. For months she heard nothing. Then, 2 years later, Mr van der Broek returned and took her to where her husband was, still alive. He had been badly beaten. In front of her, they set her husband on fire. His last words were, "Father, forgive them.." In the courtroom, the Reconciliation Commission ask the woman what she wants done with Mr van der Broek. She replied that she wanted 3 things.. First, to be taken to the place where her husband was killed to have a proper burial. Secondly, she said that she had no family so she wanted Mr van der Broek to become her son, for him to visit her in the ghetto twice a month to spend a day with her where she would simply pour out her remaining love on him. Third, she asked to be taken across the courtroom to embrace Mr van der Broek so he would know he was truly forgiven. At this, Mr van der Broek fainted from the emotion. As he did, the whole courtroom spontaneously broke out in, 'Amazing grace, how sweet the sound, that saved a wretch like me..'
Today, there is hope.
(Extra - £10 note)
GET - a nice new £10 note and say it is worth £10. Then screw it up, put it on the floor. Make it dirty etc. SAY that the note is still worth £10. No matter how dirty we are, no matter how messed up, that we can come through with the victory and that God is willing for us to succeed.
