Some Bible Truths and Promises

Just a simple talk – it’s looking at what the Bible says about itself and the promises we can find in the Bible.

One thing you could do is to play some chill out, ambient or soaking music, get the room looking good and just read these verses over the young people.

After you read each promise, you can encourage young people to pray / think about each promise. What does it mean to them? How can they live out the promises? How can they apply or pray the promises of the Bible for their own life, for their friends, family and for worldwide situations? We’ve included a few thoughts after each verse…

We’ve done a video which you can run (about 6 mins only and no space after each Bible verse). Feel free to use this before you start to get young people to focus on the Bible verses!

Matthew 24.35 and Isaiah 40.8

Heaven & earth will pass away but my Word will never pass away.

The grass withers, the flower fades, but the word of our God stands forever.

If God’s Word never passes away and other things do, how does this affect your priorities in life?

Psalm 138.2

… For You have magnified Your word above all Your name.

If God has put his Word above even his own name, what does that tell us about how important it is?

How can we put God’s Word above everything else in our lives?

John 21.25

And there are also many other things that Jesus did, which if they were written one by one, I suppose that even the world itself could not contain the books that would be written.

The Bible isn’t a complete record of everything that Jesus did – he did so much that not everything could be recorded.

How does this affect your thoughts about who God is / how big God is?

Jesus did things that aren’t in the Bible in probably ways that we don’t find in the Bible. How does this challenge you about your life and the things you do in the 21st century. How does the Bible relate to these things?

John 8.31-32

Then Jesus said to those Jews who believed Him, “If you abide in My word, you are My disciples indeed. And you shall know the truth, and the truth shall make you free.”

It’s the word that you know that sets you free!

Isaiah 51.6

I have put my words in your mouth.

What does it mean that God’s Word are in your mouth?

Psalm 119.105

Your word is a lamp to my feet and a light to my path.

Think about what a light does for you. When do you need a light? How do you use a light? How do we relate this to the Bible?

Romans 10.17

So faith comes from hearing, and hearing through the word of Christ.

If you don’t have faith, then faith can come to you…Faith is important and pleases God. If faith comes through the Word, what does this mean for you and the Bible?

2 Peter 3.5 and Hebrews 1.3

….long ago by God’s word the heavens came into being and the earth was formed out of water and by water.

The Son is the radiance of God’s glory and the exact representation of his being, sustaining all things by his powerful word.

Who created the world? God. How did he create the world? By his Word. What keeps the world going? God’s Word.

So God’s word has the power to create the world. Kind of makes you think about what happens when we line up our thoughts, words and actions with God’s Word doesn’t it?!

Jeremiah 23.29

Is not my word like fire,” declares the Lord, “and like a hammer that breaks a rock in pieces?

Are there situations where you want to see God’s fire? Or is there a situation that needs smashing – maybe the work of the devil in the world? Use the Word of God!

Luke 8.11

This is the meaning of the parable: The seed is the word of God.

What does a seed do? It grows up and becomes the thing that you planted it for – so an apple seed becomes an apple tree. But you have to look after it, plant it in the soil, allow the sun to shine on it and water it. If you do, the seed will grow into something great and then go on to produce more seeds and fruit!

Hebrews 4.12

For the word of God is alive and active. Sharper than any double-edged sword, it penetrates even to dividing soul and spirit, joints and marrow; it judges the thoughts and attitudes of the heart.

Here are some of the things Hebrews says about the Bible… It is alive. It is active. It is sharper than any double-edged sword. It even divides soul and spirit. It divides between joints and marrow. It judges the thoughts and attitudes in your heart.

2 Samuel 7.28

And now, O Lord God, You are God, and Your words are true, and You have promised this goodness to Your servant.

God’s words are true. And God has promised this goodness to his people. That means you. Are there any promises that you can think of in the Bible that you can ask God for?

John 1.1, 14 and Revelation 19.13

In the beginning was the Word, and the Word was with God, and the Word was God… The Word became flesh and made his dwelling among us. We have seen his glory, the glory of the one and only Son, who came from the Father, full of grace and truth.

He was clothed with a robe dipped in blood, and His name is called The Word of God.

Jesus is the Word (while he was on the earth and now, and in the future!) – so when we want to know what God’s will is or what God does or what God thinks or the things we can do – we take a look at Jesus…. How does this impact what you do, what you believe and how you live?

Matthew 4.4

Jesus answered, ‘It is written: “Man shall not live on bread alone, but on every word that comes from the mouth of God.

You’re probably someone who eats food… But Jesus said that our life is also found in the Word of God. So we need to ‘eat’ (take in) the Word of God as much as food in order to live a full and complete life! What ways can you think of to really get the Word of God inside you?

Mark 14.49 and John 10.35 and Romans 9.6

Scripture must be fulfilled.

Scripture cannot be broken.

It is not as though God’s word had failed.

Think about the fact that Jesus said that the Scripture (the Word of God) must be fulfilled – that means it will happen exactly as God says. Nothing and no-one can stop the Word of God being fulfilled. It cannot be broken. It doesn’t matter what people say or what they think – the Word of God will stand!

2 Samuel 22.31 / Psalm 18.30 / Proverbs 30.5

As for God, his way is perfect: the Lord’s word is flawless; he shields all who take refuge in him.

As for God, his way is perfect: the Lord’s word is flawless; he shields all who take refuge in him.

‘Every word of God is flawless; he is a shield to those who take refuge in him.

Three Bible verses say almost exactly the same thing, so it must be important! So God’s way is perfect. God’s Word is flawless (there is no imperfection in it). God shields all those who take refuge in God (who let God defend and help them). God is your help – God’s Word is your help, so use it every day and in time of need!

Romans 1.2

the gospel he promised beforehand through his prophets in the Holy Scriptures.

Sometimes people say that believing in God is like believing in a fairytale. These are usually people who just hate God anyway so we have to ask where they’re coming from and whether they are being fair! But here is a thought – the Bible has very clear evidence in it about God and about Jesus. One of the evidences is the fact that the Good News about Jesus was predicted by prophets in the Old Testament. What they said wasn’t vague – it was spot on and it happened through the life of Jesus.

2 Timothy 2.9

… But God’s word is not chained.

Paul said this when he was in chains! But the Word will never be chained. You may know the Bible bit in Acts when Paul and Silas were worshipping God and the chains fell off and they were freed by God. A similar thing happened to the Chinese prisoner called Brother Yun who God set free from a maximum security prison. All round the world people want to silence the Bible but all around the world the church is growing! This should give you confidence!

Ephesians 6.17

Take the helmet of salvation and the sword of the Spirit, which is the word of God.

The Word of God is like a sword. It’s for defence and protection and it is for attack (spiritually, not physically – no Bible bashing!)

2 Timothy 3.16

All Scripture is God-breathed and is useful for teaching, rebuking, correcting and training in righteousness.

All of the Bible was breathed out by God so we should respect all of God’s word as one whole. Do you need help in an area? God’s word. Do you need to be challenged? God’s word. Do you want to grow spiritually? God’s word.

Proverbs 4.21-22

My son, pay attention to what I say; turn your ear to my words. Do not let them out of your sight, keep them within your heart; for they are life to those who find them and health to one’s whole body.

Did you know that God is a healer? He is called the Lord our healer – the Lord our Doctor (Exodus 15.26) and God is the same today. All around the world, people are being healed by the power of Christians taking God’s word and praying for people. One person was healed of an impossible skin condition by praying these verses 3 times a day with his food! God’s word can heal you and you can pray for others and see them healed (Mark 16.18).

Hebrews 6.5

who have tasted the goodness of the word of God and the powers of the coming age.

The word of God is also good and can be tasted. God is good, he has good plans for you and works all things for good for those who love him. When we read and know the word of God, it does us good…

Psalm 56.10

In God, whose word I praise, in the Lord, whose word I praise.

Have you ever said thank you to God. Thank him for his Word. Thank him for what he’s done. He is worth thanking!

1 John 2.5

But if anyone obeys his word, love for God is truly made complete in them.

One way we can see that we’re growing spiritually is to love and obey God’s word. God wants what’s best for us and his word gives us guidance and ways we can live life to the full. It also protects us from messing up our life. So why would you want to do anything except do what God says!

Isaiah 55.10-11

As the rain and the snow come down from heaven, and do not return to it without watering the earth and making it bud and flourish, so that it yields seed for the sower and bread for the eater, so is my word that goes out from my mouth: It will not return to me empty, but will accomplish what I desire and achieve the purpose for which I sent it.

God’s word contains the power within it – to do what God says it will do. Think about it and believe it !!
